Congratulations to Neat Eco-Feeds for winning two awards at the 2019 Financial Times/ International Finance Corporation (FT/IFC) Transformational Business Awards held in London on the 13th June 2019. The Transformational Business Awards highlight ground-breaking, long-term private sector solutions to major development issues, with the programme’s core categories all directly related to global efforts to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For 2019, a record 270 entries were received from 246 organisations working in all regions of the world.
At a special dinner in London attended by 200 senior decision makers in business, Neat Eco-Feeds, founded by Lincoln Winimi Peedah, was awarded:
1) Special Commendee: Innovations in Food, Water and Land Category
2) Overall Winner: Excellence in Circular Economy Innovation
With protein feed constituting 65 percent of poultry and fish production costs in Ghana, and the rise of fish meal and soy meal production causing global issues such as overfishing and deforestation, Neat Eco-Feeds lowers this cost by efficiently processing slaughter waste into high protein maggot meal with the by-products bagged for use as compost for crop cultivation. This solution also helps to reduce the 15 tonnes of abattoir waste that is left to decay daily in neighbourhoods around northern Ghana.
Neat Meat has made several strides in helping poultry farmers produce feed at a cheaper price, created employment opportunities for over 25 people and protects the environment through their zero-waste production cycle.
In June 2018, with an $18,000 Proof of Concept Grant from the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC), Neat Eco-Feeds established a 175*175 substrate tank capacity maggot farm at Bazunde near Zebilla in the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Neat Meat also recently won $100,000 prize at the 4th Edition of the African Entrepreneurship Award after being shortlisted by the AEA Global Mentors as one of the Top 50 Entrepreneurs whose idea is one of the Most Significant and Sustainable in Africa.
